Who speaks Greek?
Greek language belongs to the Hellenic branch of the Indo-European language family. In ancient times, it was a significant language in the Mediterranean basin, thus influencing Latin, all modern European languages, as well as some Asian and ancient languages. Much of the modern international scientific and technical terminology is based on the Greek language.
Modern Greek, also known as New Greek, is spoken by approximately 15 million people. This term was coined to distinguish the modern Greek language from Ancient Greek. It is the official language only in Greece and Cyprus. It is also used by national minorities in Armenia, Romania, Albania, Turkey, the United States, Ukraine, and Hungary. Greek is one of the official languages of the European Union.
History of the Greek Language
The modern Greek language originated from Ancient Greek and boasts the longest documented history among all languages in the world. Its roots date back almost 3,500 years. The history of Greek is divided into several periods, each of which is named accordingly:
- Мycenaean language is the earliest phase of the Greek language, dating from around 1600 BCE to 1200 BCE. It was primarily spoken in Crete, the Aegean islands, and the Peloponnese.
- Archaic language – known primarily from the works of Homer, it was used after the fall of the Mycenaean civilization during the «Dark age» and the Archaic period of Ancient Greece.
- Classical language – a language with strongly accentuated dialects, used in the classical period in Ancient Greece.
- Koine Greek – a language used during the Hellenistic period in Ancient Greece, emerged as a result of blending dialects of Classical Greek and Latin languages.
- Middle Greek — used during the Byzantine period, derived from the Greek Koine.
- Katharevousa (Καθαρεύουσα) – a language belonging to the classical Greek language, artificially created after Greece regained its independence in the 19th century. It served as the primary language of the state, literature, and public life during the 19th and 20th centuries.
- Dimotiki is a contemporary folk colloquial form of the Greek language that emerged in the 19th century. Modern Greek language (since 1976) is Dimotiki (with some elements of Katharevousa).
The Greek language is currently regulated by the Center for the Greek Language.
