Who speaks Italian in the world?
Currently, there are about 100 million Italian speakers worldwide. Italian belongs to the Indo-European language family, within the Romance language subfamily. It is the official language of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Switzerland (2 southern cantons), and Istria (Croatia).
Please note
In Italy Italian is the native language for approximately 30 million people. The rest of the Italians use local dialects every day, which are so diverse that they may be unintelligible to those who speak only Italian.
Moreover, a certain portion of the population of the Mediterranean basin speaks Italian. These include Malta, Greece, Slovenia, and Croatia. A specific dialect of the Italian language can also be heard in Corsica.
Italian is one of the official languages of the European Union. Due to economic emigration, Italian speakers can also be found in other parts of the world, such as the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom. Italian minorities also exist in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, as well as in Germany and Poland.
Italian language history
Italian belongs to the group of Romance languages, which originated from Latin. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the common Latin language used by people started evolving into dialects predominant in different parts of the peninsula. The Italian language developed from one of these dialects – the Tuscan dialect.
Did you know
The development of the Italian language during the Renaissance era is closely linked to medieval writers such as Francesco Petrarch, Dante Alighieri, and Giovanni Boccaccio, who created some of the most important literary works of that time. In doing so, they elevated Tuscan to the status of a literary language.
In the era of the Renaissance, a comprehensive grammar of the Italian language was developed, shaping its current form. Modern Italian distinguishes three major dialects: Tuscan, Northern, and Southern-Central.
Today Italian doesn’t hold as prominent a role on the international stage as, for example, English does, but its knowledge is highly valuable and contributes to fostering good business relations with Italian speakers.
Characteristics of the Italian language
Translating from Ukrainian to Italian or from Italian to Ukrainian is not so simple, as each language has its own peculiarities.
- In Italian there is no neuter gender (only masculine and feminine) and cases. Syntax in sentences is determined by the use of prepositions.
- There are three verb conjugations, which change according to person and have six forms in each tense.
- One particular challenge faced by translators from Russian to Italian is irregular verbs. They do not follow any rules and must simply be memorized.
- The letters J, W, K, Y, and X can only be found in words borrowed from other languages.
- Almost all words end with a vowel sound.
When translating from Italian, it’s important to remember: many words, while sounding similar to Ukrainian, have completely different meanings.
