Polish language worldwide
Polish belongs to the Indo-European language family, specifically to the Lechitic subgroup of the West Slavic languages. Approximately 45 million people speak Polish. While it is the official language of Poland, a significant number of people in immigrant communities also speak Polish.
The largest Polish diaspora communities reside in the western part of Belarus, Lithuania, and Ukraine. Additionally, sizable communities exist in Germany, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Norway, Ireland, Sweden, France, Australia, Canada, the United States, Brazil, and Argentina. Interestingly, Polish is one of the official languages of the European Union.
History of the Polish Language
The oldest recorded sentence in Polish is «Day, ut ia pobrusa, a ti poziwai», which translates from Old Polish as «Let me grind, and you rest». It originates from the Henryków Book (Księga Henrykowska). In 1285, it was decided that this language would be used alongside Latin in monastery schools.
Note
The Polish language originates from Proto-Slavic. The first written document on Polish orthography dates back to around 1455, authored by Jakub Parkoszowic, a Polish linguist and grammarian. Much like Jan Hus, he aimed to adapt the Latin alphabet to represent the sounds of the Polish language in writing.
There are four stages in the development of the Polish language: Old Polish – between ancient times and the beginning of the 16th century AD, Middle Polish – from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century, New Polish – until 1930, and Modern Polish – from 1930 to the present day. Modern Polish language originates from the Lesser Polish and Greater Polish dialects. Standard/Cultural Polish is largely based on the Mazovian dialects.
Features of the Polish language
The Polish language utilizes the Polish alphabet, a modified form of the Latin alphabet, with additional letters (ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż). Polish is closely related to Kashubian, Silesian, Upper Sorbian, Lower Sorbian, Czech, and Slovak languages.
Please note
Polish grammar is quite complex due to the retention of the case system from Old Slavic language – seven cases for nouns, adjectives, and pronouns. Further complexity arises from the use of five gender types: masculine for people, masculine for animals, masculine for objects, feminine, and neuter gender.
While in other Slavic languages the stress is movable, in Polish it almost always falls on the penultimate syllable. Not only foreigners, but also many Poles have problems with spelling words containing the letters ż, rz, u, ó, h, ch, as they sound almost the same. There are many rules in grammar and punctuation, and twice as many exceptions. Perhaps that’s why it’s said that the Polish language is one of the most difficult in the world.
