Who speaks Swedish?
Swedish, like Norwegian and Danish, belongs to the Scandinavian (Nordic) group of Germanic languages. It is the official language of Sweden and one of the official languages of Finland and the European Union. Around 9 million people speak it. Besides Swedes, it is primarily spoken by Swedish Finns in Finland, where Swedish is also often the language of international business.
The Finnish Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea are predominantly Swedish-speaking. Therefore, Swedish is spoken by the ordinary residents of both countries, as well as by businessmen, politicians, educators, and even soldiers of some Finnish units. Norwegians understand it quite well, and to a lesser extent, so do Danes.
History of the Swedish language
The first traces of North Germanic languages, from which Swedish originated, can be found as early as the 3rd century AD. By the medieval times, this language had diverged into various Northern languages. The runic Swedish language was developed in the 12th century. With the advent of Christianity, the Latin alphabet replaced the runic script that had been in use until then. By the 13th century, the Swedish language had evolved. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Swedish also spread to Finland, becoming its official language. Remnants of those times include dialects of the Swedish language still spoken in some parts of southern and western municipalities of Finland.
Note
Since the 18th century, Swedish has undergone a division into ceremonial (courtly) language used in Stockholm and the language used among the people. Currently, the official language is also based on the Stockholm dialect.
Swedish in business
While Swedish is one of the official languages of the EU, it does not play a major role on the international stage and is primarily useful in trade contacts with Scandinavian countries.
