Simultaneous interpretation is a subset of oral translation where the interpreter transmits the speaker’s speech in another language with a slight delay (in fractions of a second), utilizing special acoustic equipment (headphones, microphones, mixing consoles, soundproof booths, etc.).

Differences between simultaneous and consecutive interpretation
When ordering translation services, it is important to understand the difference between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. Unlike consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation is performed concurrently with the speaker’s speech. In this case, the linguist works in a specially equipped booth with technical facilities.
Please note!
Consecutive interpreting is a type of oral translation where the translation is done in small sections, with pauses and without the use of specialized equipment. For example, for accompaniment to a business meeting or negotiations, this is most likely the type of interpretation you will need.
Ways of simultaneous translation
There are several ways of simultaneous translation. The most popular option is simultaneous translation “by ear”, where the translator hears the speaker’s speech through headphones and reproduces the information in the foreign language in logical segments.
Sometimes simultaneous translation with preliminary preparation is also used – the translator is given a written text of the upcoming speech in advance, and they make the corresponding changes (if any) during the presentation of this speech.
Whispered interpretation (shushutage)
One type of simultaneous interpretation is whispered interpretation, also known as shushutage. It is appropriate when the number of listeners does not exceed two people and involves whispering the speaker’s speech simultaneously into the listener’s ear.
The advantages of this type of interpretation are evident: information is perceived simultaneously with the speaker’s speech, without delays, and no special equipment is required. However, this type of interpretation requires additional concentration, stress resistance, and endurance from the interpreter, as they work alone.
Whispered interpretation is widely used for accompanying business meetings, presentations, exhibitions, tourist trips, and other events.
Features of simultaneous translation
- Maintaining perfect concentration throughout the entire workday (7-8 hours) is quite challenging. Therefore, oral simultaneous translation is often carried out by two individuals, alternating with each other. According to commonly accepted norms, the continuous working time for a simultaneous interpreter should not exceed 3-3.5 hours.
- Translators are typically paid not by the number of hours but by the workday. Special equipment is mandatory for simultaneous interpretation. If you don’t have it, take advantage of our equipment rental service for simultaneous translation.
Cost of simultaneous translation services
Simultaneous translation is considered the most challenging form of oral translation. Simultaneous interpreters must not only have a perfect command of the language but also be resourceful, possess good reaction times, and have high stress tolerance.
Therefore, the rates for simultaneous interpretation services are significantly higher than those for consecutive interpretation services.
