Equipment for simultaneous translation is a set of specialized devices used at various events to facilitate oral simultaneous translation. Having such equipment is a mandatory requirement for conducting simultaneous interpretation.
What’s included in the standard set
The equipment needed for simultaneous interpretation consists of:
- radio receivers and headphones for listeners;
- two sets of microphones and headphones for interpreters;
- a sound-proof booth for 2 interpreters;
- radio transmitter having an aerial.

Note
The acoustic system, audio mixing desk and microphones will be selected ad hoc depending on the premise area and number of the persons present.
Usage features
The diversity of languages and, as a result, the language barrier, is one of the main challenges effectively addressed by synchronous translation systems. They are utilized in various international events such as seminars, conferences, presentations, congresses, forums, and the like. Specialized equipment for synchronous translation enables simultaneous interpretation of the speaker’s speech and dividing the translated output into separate channels for each language. As a result, all participants can listen to the speaker and communicate in their respective languages.
Types of synchronous translation systems
Depending on the nature of language channel distribution, such equipment is divided into wired and wireless. Wired systems are often installed in cinemas and large concert halls. Channel switches and headphone jacks are usually built into seat armrests.
However, wireless systems are more common today, which are subdivided into infrared and radio frequency. They are very compact and therefore can be easily placed in any room.
For large international events, it is better to use infrared systems as they provide complete confidentiality. Radio frequency transmitters are mainly used for small or outdoor events.
