Features of Police Clearance Certificate translation
Translating a police clearance certificate is a responsible task, as this document may have legal significance when processing documents for international purposes. When translating a police clearance certificate, the following features should be taken into account:
Certification of a Certificate of No Criminal Record by a notary public
Certification of a certificate of no criminal record implies that the translation of this document is done by a professional translator registered with a notary public and is then notarized. This is done to give legal force to the translation and confirm its authenticity.
The procedure for notarizing a certificate of no criminal record looks as follows:
| 1 |
Translation of the certificate |
First, the certificate of no criminal record must be translated from the original language into the required language for the certified translation. |
| 2 |
Notary visit |
Next, the translator, holding the status of a certified notary translator, consults with a notary to certify the translation. The notary conducts a review of the documents and verifies the authenticity of the translator’s signature. |
| 3 |
Notarial certification |
Then, the notary signs and affixes the notarial seal to the translation. |
Apostille or legalization of Certificate of No Criminal Record
Apostille and legalization are two different processes related to official documents, including certificates of no criminal record, which may be required for use abroad.
- Apostille – is an international certification of the authenticity of official documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas, and, of course, criminal record certificates. Apostille simplifies the process of document recognition in countries that have adopted the Hague Convention of 1961. After apostillation, a criminal record certificate becomes valid for use in these countries without additional legalization.
- Legalization – this process is required for official documents when the country where you intend to use the document is not a party to the Hague Convention or if the country has specific requirements for the recognition of documents. Legalization involves a series of steps, such as notarization of the authenticity of the certificate of no criminal record, followed by authentication by the Ministry of Justice (or equivalent body), and then by the consular or diplomatic representative of the country where the document will be used.
If you plan to use a certificate of no criminal record abroad, you will likely need to undergo the process of apostille or legalization, depending on the requirements of the country where you intend to submit this document.
Please note
We recommend contacting the consulate or embassy of the country where you intend to submit your documents to inquire about the specific requirements and procedures for apostille or legalization of a certificate of no criminal record.
