Who speaks Arabic in the world?
Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages globally. It is part of the Afro-Asiatic language family, specifically the group of Semitic languages, and more precisely the Southwestern Semitic languages. More than 300 million people speak it.

Arabic allows us to communicate easily across much of North Africa and Saudi Arabia. It is the official language of Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Chad, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia. Interestingly, Arabic is one of the official languages of the United Nations General Assembly.
As the language of the Quran, Arabic is widely used throughout the Muslim world. The Arabic language comprises several dialects, including Classical Arabic, the language of the Quran, and Modern Standard Arabic, an adapted form used in contemporary newspapers, books, radio, television, mosques, and conversations among educated individuals.
Please note
There are approximately 20 dialects of this language that coexist with the standard literary language. A translator must understand the differences between these dialects and take them into account in their translations.
History of the Arabic language
The earliest traces of the proto-Arabic language can be found as far back as the 6th century BCE! Based on discovered inscriptions, it has been concluded that the language then split into two main branches: Aramaic and Epigraphic. The more modern Arabic language dates back to the 7th century CE and is closely linked to Islam. This was the so-called Classical Arabic, which eventually evolved into the literary language. Our bureau specializes in Standard (Modern) Arabic, which fully developed from the late 18th to the mid-20th century.
Arabic in business
Several interesting facts highlight the crucial role of Arabic in business. In the UAE, for instance, multi-billion-dollar oil contracts are drafted in Arabic. It’s the language in which dealers buy and sell on the Qatar Stock Exchange. In Cairo, Arabic is used extensively in one of the most significant sectors of the global television and film industry. In Beirut, it’s the primary language in high fashion advertising across the Middle East.
Note
It is said that Arabs appreciate foreigners who can boast at least a basic knowledge of Arabic. This can open many doors and lead to good business relationships.
Thus, the services of translators to/from Arabic will be extremely useful for companies planning to operate in the northern part of Africa and other Muslim countries.
