Spread of the Azerbaijani language
Azerbaijani belongs to the large Altaic language family, specifically to the Turkic (Oghuz) group. It is closely related to Turkish, Turkmen, and Crimean Tatar.
Approximately 32 million people speak Azerbaijani, not only in Azerbaijan itself, where it is the official language, but also abroad in countries with Azerbaijani diaspora communities such as Iran, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Azerbaijani is also one of the official languages of the Republic of Dagestan.
History
Azerbaijani originated from the Oghuz language group, whose speakers (the Oghuz people) inhabited regions stretching from the Balkans to China. It is considered one of the world’s ancient languages, having fully developed by the 11th-12th centuries.
The historical development of the Azerbaijani language can be divided into two main periods: the early period (16th to 18th centuries) and the modern period (18th century to the present). Early Azerbaijani differed significantly from its modern form, containing a much higher number of Persian and Arabic words and syntactical elements.
The Azerbaijani language was written using the Arabic script until the 1920s. In 1928, a new alphabet based on the Latin script was created for the Azerbaijani language. This alphabet later became the foundation for the Turkish language script.
Note
Today, Azerbaijanis use three types of scripts: Arabic script in Iran, Latin script in Azerbaijan, and Cyrillic script in Dagestan.
Currently, there are two main varieties of the Azerbaijani language: North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani. The former has been heavily influenced by the Russian language over time, while the latter has experienced Persian influences. These differences are still evident today in terms of loanwords, pronunciation, and the spelling of certain words.
Azerbaijani in business
While Azerbaijani language does not play a major role on the international stage, its knowledge can be highly beneficial for conducting business in Georgia, Iran, and Russia, and even indispensable in Azerbaijan itself. Therefore, when operating in these markets, it is crucial to ensure professional translations of all company materials into Azerbaijani. However, when importing goods (such as oil, spirits, or aluminum, for which Azerbaijan is renowned) into the domestic market, professional translation from Azerbaijani to Ukrainian should be ensured.
