The spread of the Croatian language
Croatian is a member of the Indo-European language family, belonging to the South Slavic group. Today, approximately 7 million people speak Croatian.
Note
As is often the case, Croatian is not a monolithic language. Three dominant dialects can be identified: Chakavian, Kajkavian, and Shtokavian. Some refer to these as dialect groups due to their further subdivision into smaller varieties.
Croatian is the official language of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (alongside Bosnian and Serbian). It is also one of the official languages of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia and the European Union. Croatian is primarily spoken in Croatia. Additionally, it is used by Croatian minorities in neighboring countries such as Montenegro, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Romania.
History of the Croatian language
The first traces of the Croatian language date back to the 9th century AD. It originates from the so-called Old Church Slavonic language, which initially served primarily a religious purpose. Old Church Slavonic gradually adapted for secular use, eventually developing into its Croatian version. Until the 9th century, it was part of Glagolitic script—the oldest Slavic script created by Saint Cyril.
Interesting
Until the 11th century, the Croatian language was written using three different alphabets: Latin, Glagolitic, and Croatian Cyrillic. It wasn’t until the 16th century that a developed version of Croatian emerged.
Efforts to unify the languages of the South Slavs in the late 19th century led to the creation of Serbo-Croatian. This language persisted for nearly a century and a half until the dissolution of Yugoslavia. In 1990, the Croatian language was recognized as the official language of Croatia, with the Latin alphabet adopted as its official script.
