Who speaks Kazakh?
The Kazakh language belongs to the Kipchak-Nogai subgroup of the Kipchak group of Turkic languages. Approximately 8.3 million people speak Kazakh as their native language. Outside of Kazakhstan, it is spoken in China, Uzbekistan, Russia, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and Germany.
In Kazakhstan, Kazakh is the official state language, serving as the language of education and literature. Despite this, Russian remains the second most commonly used language in the country due to prolonged Russification and isolation from non-Soviet cultural spheres.
The history of the Kazakh language
For many of us, the Kazakh language is one of the rarest and most enigmatic languages, the existence of which we only acknowledge when looking at a map of distant regions of Asia. Despite the fact that today the Kazakh language remains very exotic, more and more translators and linguists are exploring its mysteries. What do we know about the Kazakh language today?
The Kazakh language boasts a long and dynamic history, spanning approximately 1,000 years. Before it became the primary language of Kazakhstan, the region was home to numerous dialects spoken by its nomadic peoples. Despite the variety of these dialects, communication among the nomads was always possible. The formation of the Kazakh literary language began as early as the 15th century, though it was not fully established until the 18th century.
Fascinating facts
Influential figures such as Bukhar Zhyrau Kalkamanuly, a representative of Kazakh oral-poetic creativity, and Abai Ibrahim Kunanbayev, an undisputed classic of Kazakh literature whose works have been translated into many languages worldwide, greatly impacted the development of the Kazakh language. Kunanbayev was essentially a co-author of the modern Kazakh language. His invaluable contribution to the culture of Kazakhstan includes translating the works of great writers like Goethe and Byron into Kazakh.
The colonial policies implemented by the Soviet Union led to the decline of the Kazakh nation. President Nursultan Nazarbayev described the 20th century as a period of devastation for Kazakhstan’s language and culture.
The revival of the Kazakh language is closely linked to Kazakhstan gaining independence in 1991. After years of Russification, Kazakh has become the language of instruction in local universities. Literature in Kazakh is being translated into an increasing number of world languages, and films are being produced in Kazakh, all contributing to the resurgence of Kazakh culture. A clear sign of this return to roots is that more and more city residents are focusing on learning the language.
The orthography of the Kazakh language has undergone several changes: it was written in Arabic script (until 1929), Latin script (1929-1940), and Cyrillic script (since 1940). Currently, there are plans to gradually reintroduce the Latin script by 2025.
Kazakh in business
The Kazakh language will be beneficial to anyone planning to start a business in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, or Mongolia. Therefore, when operating in these markets, it is crucial to ensure professional translation of all company materials into Kazakh. However, in the case of importing goods (such as mineral products or chemical industry products) into the domestic market of Ukraine, it is advisable to arrange for professional translations from Kazakh to Ukrainian.
