Bulgarian language distribution
Bulgarian is a language of the South Slavic group within the Indo-European family (Balkan language union). It is spoken by approximately 9 million people, predominantly in Bulgaria, where it is the official language. Additionally, Bulgarian is spoken in Greece, Canada, Moldova, North Macedonia, Romania, the USA, Turkey, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Ukraine.
The Bulgarian language is notable for its wide variety of dialects, including Balkan, Rup, Moesian, and Torlakian. The Bulgarian alphabet is a modified version of the Cyrillic script. As a member of the European Union, all EU documents are translated into Bulgarian.
History of the Bulgarian language
Bulgarian traces its origins to the language of the Balkan Slavs, who settled on the Balkan Peninsula between the 5th and 7th centuries. The most significant changes in the Bulgarian language occurred between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Note
Greek and Turkish have substantially influenced the Bulgarian language. In the 19th century, many Turkish words in Bulgarian were replaced with Russian words, some of which were borrowed from Polish.
Modern Bulgarian literary language began to take shape in the 18th century, with the main debates about the form of the language occurring in the 19th century.
Bulgarian in business
Bulgarian is spoken in several countries, but it doesn’t play a significant role on the international stage. An exception may be Bulgaria itself, which has become famous as one of the favorite vacation spots for Ukrainians. Thus, Bulgarian can be primarily useful for business relations with Bulgaria and for travel purposes.
