Interesting facts
The closest languages to Slovene are Serbo-Croatian and Slovak. Slovenian comprises 7 groups of quite diverse dialects. In terms of pronunciation, this language stands out among other Slavic languages due to its small number of soft consonants. Stressed vowels can be either long or short, which can affect the meaning of words.
Slovenian language – history
The Slovenian language originates from Proto-Slavic. The oldest preserved manuscripts in Slovenian are the Freising manuscripts, estimated to have been written before 1093. They are also the oldest manuscripts among all Slavic languages. The literary language developed in the second half of the 16th century largely due to the Reformation and Lutheran activities.
Primoz Trubar wrote the first Slovenian book. The grammar of the Slovenian language was first described by Adam Bohorič, and Jurij Dalmatin was the first to translate the Bible into Slovenian.
Please note
Until 1918, Slovenian was the language of the lower classes in the territory of present-day Slovenia. During that time, German, which was the language of educated people, exerted significant influence on the Slovenian language (especially on vocabulary and phraseology). Therefore, numerous Germanisms have been preserved in the modern language.
Today, the Slovenian language plays a role primarily in business cooperation with Slovenia, which is one of Ukraine’s important business directions.
