Where Tatar is spoken
Tatar is a language belonging to the Kipchak subgroup of the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family. It is the official language of the Republic of Tatarstan and the second most spoken native language in the Russian Federation. Tatar is the language of the Kazan (Volga) Tatars.
Please note
In Russia, 5,300,000 people speak Kazan Tatar, including 4,500,000 Tatars, 520,000 Bashkirs (sometimes used in colloquial language), 130,000 Russians, 70,000 Chuvash, 42,000 Mari people, as well as Udmurts and Mordvins. Tatar is a language of interethnic communication in the Volga region among Tatars, Bashkirs, Chuvashes, Kazakhs, Mari people, Mordvins, and Udmurts.
In addition, Tatar is spoken by some residents of former USSR countries, including Ukraine, as well as Turkey, China, and Finland. The Tatar language consists of three main dialects: Central, Western (Mishar), and Eastern, spoken by Siberian Tatars.
History of the Tatar language
The Tatar language, like its native people, originated in the Volga and Ural regions. Throughout its development, it has been influenced by Persian, Arabic, Russian, and Finno-Ugric languages. The oldest literary monument in Tatar is the poem “Kissa-i Yusuf,” written in the 13th century.
Tatar was the official language of the Kazan Khanate until 1552. After 1917, it became official in the Tatar SSR and in the Idel-Ural Republic of the Volga region.
The modern Tatar language emerged in the second half of the 19th century through the merger of norms from Old Tatar with Köine. The literary Old Tatar language descends from Old Turkic literary language, which itself evolved from the ancient Turkic written language.
Ancient Turkic used runic script, while Old Turkic and Old Tatar used Arabic script. Before Soviet times, Tatar used the Arabic alphabet. In 1927, the Soviet government introduced Latin script, and from 1939 onward, Cyrillic script with additional letters to represent unique Tatar sounds.
Fascinating facts
At the end of the 20th century, during the “perestroika” period, there were attempts to switch to the Latin alphabet, but this transition was vetoed by the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation. Today, the Tatar script uses the Cyrillic alphabet.
