Who speaks Vietnamese?
Vietnamese belongs to the Mon-Khmer group of the large Austroasiatic language family. It is spoken by approximately 76 million people (about 1.1% of the world’s population). This language ranks 16th among the most spoken languages in the world by the number of native speakers.
Vietnamese is, of course, the official language of Vietnam. Additionally, it is the native language of the Vietnamese diaspora in many countries. You can find Vietnamese speakers in China, Cambodia, Laos, and other East Asian countries, as well as in Australia and France.
A large number of Vietnamese immigrants live in the United States. In the U.S., Vietnamese is the sixth most spoken language by the number of native speakers (approximately 1.5 million people). Interestingly, it is officially recognized as one of the 14 minority languages in the Czech Republic.
Vietnamese language – history
The Vietnamese language has a long and complex history, having undergone the influence of two different empires—Chinese and French—while maintaining its distinctiveness.
Essentially, the history of the Vietnamese language can be divided into six periods: Pre-Vietnamese, Proto-Vietnamese, Archaic, Ancient, Middle Vietnamese, and Modern. The “Ancient Vietnamese Language” being listed as number four might seem a bit unsettling, doesn’t it? This gives us some insight into the enduring nature of the culture of this country.
