Who speaks Finnish?
Finnish belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of the Uralic language family. It is estimated that around 6 million people worldwide use it. Finnish is related to Sami, Estonian, and to a much lesser extent, Hungarian.
Finnish can be used to communicate in Finland, where it is an official language alongside Swedish, as well as in Sweden, where around 300,000 people of Finnish descent reside. People who speak this language can also be found in some regions of Norway and Estonia. Finnish is one of the official languages of the European Union.
Features of the Finnish language
Finnish is considered a complex language, featuring original Finno-Ugric vocabulary, several cases, and rather intricate grammatical rules. It is based on the principle of vowel harmony, meaning that within a single word, there are only vowels of one type.
Interesting fact
J.R.R. Tolkien, when developing the Elvish language for his novels, modeled its sound after the Finnish language.
History of the Finnish language
The early Finnish language likely emerged around 1000 BCE, influenced significantly by Baltic and Germanic languages. Interestingly, the first written text in the history of the Finnish language dates back to the 13th century and was written in the then Rus. When Sweden annexed Finland, the population mainly spoke Finnish, although the official language was Swedish.
The first written sentence in Finnish dates back to the year 1450 and is attributed to a bishop who reportedly wrote, “I really want to speak Finnish, but I can’t.” In 1524, when Sweden severed ties with the Catholic Church and introduced Lutheran faith, the Bible was translated into Finnish, making it accessible to the population. This paved the way for the development of the Finnish language in written form. The first book in Finnish was published in 1543.
After 1809 (the Grand Duchy of Finland was under Russian rule), a group of Fennomans emerged, aiming to introduce the Finnish language into the culture. As a result, during the 19th century, Finnish significantly supplanted or completely replaced Swedish in all spheres of life. By the 1920s, the Finnish language was fully formed.
Finnish in business
Finnish language is useful primarily for trade contacts with Scandinavian countries. Despite being one of over 25 official languages of the EU, and its users being guaranteed assistance in official matters in their native language, it doesn’t play a significant role in business activities.
