Who speaks Danish in the world?
Danish belongs to the Indo-European language family, specifically the North Germanic group. Today, approximately 6 million people speak Danish. It is primarily spoken by residents of Denmark, where Danish is the official language. It is also used by residents of other geographical regions. Many residents of the northern region of Germany, such as Schleswig-Holstein, and Greenland communicate in Danish. Danish holds official language status in the Faroe Islands as well.
Interesting fact
In Iceland, Danish is taught as one of the main foreign languages alongside English and Norwegian, all because Iceland was under Danish rule until the 1940s.
Moreover, Danish is one of the official languages of the European Union.
History
The history of the Danish language dates back to the 2nd century. At that time, Scandinavian peoples communicated in a common vernacular. It was only a hundred years later that the Danish language separated and began functioning as a distinct language. Nevertheless, to this day, Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes can understand each other when speaking their native languages. Danish reached its standardized form in the 17th century.
Please note
It’s interesting that the southern dialects of the Swedish language are related to Danish dialects. This is because these regions were settled by Danes before 1658.
Danish shows traces of intensive contact with German, French, and Latin languages. Currently, it is quite uniform, with dialects being unpopular and undeveloped. Danish language incorporates many anglicisms, but its form has remained practically unchanged for many years.
