Who speaks Malay?
The Malay language (Bahasa Melayu) belongs to the Austronesian language family, specifically to the Malay-Polynesian language group. It is spoken natively by approximately 80 million people (over 1% of the world’s population) and ranks 14th in the list of the most widely spoken languages in the world by number of native speakers.
Malay language is the official language of Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and Indonesia. In countries where it is spoken as a native language, it is referred to as Bahasa (Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia).
In the latter country, the standardized variety of Malay, Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), functions as a supra-regional language (lingua franca), facilitating communication between different ethnic groups.
Additionally, Malay is spoken by some residents of Thailand, the Philippines, and the Cocos Islands. It is estimated that over 200 million people speak Malay in total.

Blue color indicates official language status.
Light blue indicates recognized minority or trade language.
In a broader sense, Malay can be considered a macro-language, i.e., a language consisting of a number of related varieties spoken by the inhabitants of Southeast Asia.
Note
The main differences between the two main variants of the Malay language spoken in Malaysia and Indonesia are related to vocabulary. Indonesian Malay has more borrowings from Dutch and Javanese languages.
The standards of the Malay language are regulated by the Language and Literature Institute (in Malaysia) and the Language Council of Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia (an international body operating in countries where Malay is official).
History of the Malay language
At its early stages, the Malay language was influenced by Sanskrit and Tamil. The oldest known written texts in Malay date back to the 7th century.
The Malay language saw significant development during the Malacca Sultanate period (15th century), during which it absorbed many Arabic loanwords (at other times, Malay has borrowed Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese, English words, etc.).
Malay was originally written using a modified Arabic script known as Jawi, which has survived to this day. Currently, the widely used script is the Latin alphabet.
Interesting facts about the Malay language
- There is no inflection for tenses, persons, numbers, genders, or cases in Malay. The correct meaning of sentences is determined by the context of the statement or additional words specifying, for example, the time of the event (future or past).
- Plural form can sometimes be expressed by duplication, i.e., repeating the word.
- As mentioned earlier, the development of Malay vocabulary has been influenced by borrowings from many languages. Therefore, there are numerous synonyms for many concepts. For example, a book in Malay can be called “pustaka,” “kitab,” or “buku” (borrowings from Sanskrit, Arabic, and English languages).
- However, Malay language has also been a source of borrowings for many modern languages. Into Ukrainian, via English, words such as gong, ketchup, and orangutan have entered.
